The 19-year-old won the top spot for being the first Indian woman to win the Badminton Super Series.

Indian ace shuttler, Saina Nehwal has won her maiden Super Series title as she defeated Ling Wang, World no. 3, of China in the final of the Indonesia Open Super Series at Jakarta on 22nd June 2009.


The award was given to Saina Nehwal in a glittering award ceremony on Dec 21 at Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was the Chief Guest at the occasion.


Speaking on the occasion Rajdeep Sardesai, Editor-in-Chief, IBN18 Network said: 'I would like to convey my heartiest congratulations to Saina Nehwal for being chosen CNN-IBN Sportsperson of the Year '09. Saina was honoured for transforming the image of the contemporary Indian sportswoman and beating the best in the world in the highly competitive sport of badminton.'
